2010 Honourees: Julian and Liviana Fantino
 
 

Julian Fantino was appointed the Commissioner of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) on October 30, 2006. He thereby accepted the responsibility of administering one of North America’s largest deployed police services, comprising approximately 6,000 uniformed members, 2,600 civilian employees and 850 Auxiliary members to police over 920,000 square kilometres of land and 110,000 square kilometres of waterways.   

Julian & Liviana Fantino Biographical Sketches

During his initial 23 years with the Metropolitan Toronto Police, Commissioner Fantino has served many departments. He was appointed Chief of the Toronto Police Service in 2000 and then was appointed to the OPP in 2006.  His previous experience included appointments as the Chief of York Regional Police and the London Police Services. Commissioner Fantino has lectured extensively and held many executive positions with the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police Organized Crime Committee as well as Commissioner of Emergency Management for Ontario. He has also been a past Secretary Treasurer of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police and currently serves on the Executive Board of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. 

For his over 40 years of dedicated public service, Julian has received numerous honours from St. John’s Ambulance and the Queen’s Commission Commander as well as appointments to the Order of Police Forces and the Order of Ontario. Commissioner Fantino believes that his most valued reward has been the opportunity to be a member of an honourable profession dedicated to public service.

Liviana Fantino came to Canada in 1956 and grew up in Toronto. Liviana’s working career included 23 years with the York Catholic District Board. Liviana has spent much of her free time volunteering for a number of community based causes such as The Canadian Cancer Society, Alternatives (Integrating People with Cognitive Challenges) and Villa Colombo Vaughan Seniors’ Centre. Liviana has been recognized for her efforts with a number of volunteer awards including a 10 Year Ontario Volunteer Service Award. Liviana has been a strongly supportive marriage partner and a resourceful mother who has been dedicated to improving community life. 

Liviana and Julian have been married since 1970 and have two children and four grandchildren.
