2012 Honorees

JOSEPH S. MANCINELLI was born in Hamilton, Ontario in 1957. An artist at heart, he attended McMaster University for fine arts. Joe felt compelled to follow the footsteps of his late father Enrico Mancinelli, who had dedicated his life to improving the lives of workers in the construction industry. While starting his career with the Labourers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA), Joe finished his education, first in Business Administration at the Wharton School of Business; and then completed a graduate Trade Union, Industrial Relations program at Harvard University. He has worked for LIUNA since 1978, championing many causes and has advanced to become LIUNA’s International Vice President and Manager for Central and Eastern Canada. He is also Chair of LIUNA’s 3 billion dollar Pension Plan, initiating many innovative infrastructure investments.

During his career, he has received numerous honours, including Rotary’s Paul Harris Fellow, being named the Italian-Canadian Citizen of the Year, and in 2000 being honoured by the Jewish National Fund at their Negev dinner. Joe was the founding President of the Hamilton International Airport, sat for 12 years as a Trustee on the Board of the Hamilton Health Sciences, was founding Chair of the Bay Area Health Trust, a Director of the Centre for Minimal Access Surgery and is a Director of the Dynamic Venture Opportunity Funds.

Given Joe’s passion for art and architecture, he has also advocated for the restoration of numerous historic buildings reviving many notable neighbourhoods.

ENZA MANCINELLI (nee Sorce) was born in Hamilton, Ontario in 1963. Prior to marrying Joe in 1985, Enza was a working partner in Vista Travel; soon after their five children were born: Rosalina, Victoria, Stefania, Enrico, and Michael. After Enrico was born with Down’s Syndrome, Enza sold her interests in Vista and dedicated herself to raising her family. Enza has generously opened her home for an endless list of fund-raisers. She has been involved in several fund-raising efforts for the Down’s Syndrome Association and has been actively involved in raising several thousands of dollars for the Ofer School for Autistic Children in Haifa, Israel. She has also volunteered assisting elderly residents at the Queens Garden Long-Term Care Facility. Enza’s energy and steadfast dedication to her family, and to the community, have helped shape many lives.
